Review: Mulan
Mulan hasn’t had much to work with since it’s release on Disney + and in select theaters. Besides the actual challenge of getting people to see the film with the majority of theaters closed and the high price point to watch from home, the film was shrouded in controversy upon its release because of the main actress, Yifei Liu’s, controversial comments about the riots in Hong Kong.
Besides the fact that it was hard to get people to watch the film, the people who did watch were likely going into it with an already formed opinion of the story because of their exposure to the beloved original Disney animated film from 1998. The musical numbers and loveable characters are replaced with eastern philosophies and more action, which on the one hand compliments the live action medium, but on the other doesn’t commit to it enough to make it believable. Even if this movie wasn’t already going up against so much, the dull execution and shaky storytelling definitely didn’t bring this Disney live action remake up to snuff.
