Review: Over The Moon
It’s always refreshing to see the animated film medium move forward with new, fresh projects, especially when it is rooted in cross-cultural storytelling. Over The Moon may overplay some animated film tropes like the death of a parent and loud-mouthed sidekicks, but it also takes new and unexpected turns in the way it centers on a young girl leaning into her love of astronomy to build herself a rocket ship.
The movie is set in a small town in China and pulls in Chinese traditions and fables that paint the Chinese culture in a beautiful way. The animation, too, is bright and beautiful and a showcase for what’s possible in the world of animated film. The talent behind the film are no strangers to the medium. Glen Keane is a long-time animation supervisor from Disney and John Karhrs is an Academy Award-winning Animated Short director. While Over The Moon might not have made a big splash, hopefully it’s a hint of what’s on the horizon for animated storytelling.
